Philippines foreign reserves dip to $105.7B on gold price fall

BusinessPhilippines foreign reserves dip to $105.7B on gold price fall

The Philippines’ foreign currency reserves edged down to $105.7 billion in July 2025 from $106.0 billion the previous month, the central bank said, as declining gold valuations and government debt payments weighed on holdings.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) attributed the $300 million decrease primarily to falling global gold prices and the government’s withdrawal of foreign currency deposits to meet external debt obligations.

The gross international reserves — comprising foreign securities, currency holdings and assets including gold — serve as the archipelago nation’s financial cushion against economic volatility and help fund imports while supporting peso stability.

Despite the monthly decline, the reserves remain substantial enough to cover 7.2 months of imports for goods, services and income payments, well above the internationally recommended minimum of three months.

The buffer also represents 3.4 times the country’s short-term external debt obligations based on remaining maturity periods, providing what the BSP termed “a robust external liquidity buffer.”

Net international reserves similarly fell by the same $300 million margin to $105.7 billion at end-July, according to preliminary central bank data.

The Southeast Asian economy has maintained healthy foreign exchange reserves as it deals with global economic uncertainties, with the substantial holdings helping shield the country from external financial shocks.
