The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Monday warned the public against fraudulent schemes in which individuals falsely claim to be BSP officials or employees.
The central bank said scammers have been sending electronic messages instructing potential victims to deposit money into bank or other financial accounts, claiming this would help release, recover or restore funds. In some cases, the scammers have shown fake BSP identification cards bearing the name and photo of a real official, along with a forged signature.
BSP said the identification cards used in the scheme are fake, and that the phone numbers, email addresses and other contact details used by the scammers are not affiliated with the central bank.
The agency stressed that its officials and employees do not solicit or collect payments from the public to release, recover or restore funds. It added that legitimate financial institutions and their staff do not send unsolicited texts or emails, or make unsolicited calls, asking people to transfer money to personal accounts.
BSP urged the public not to send money, transfer funds or share personal or financial account details in response to such messages, and to avoid clicking suspicious links or downloading attachments from unknown senders.
The agency asked anyone who receives a message, call, document or ID purportedly from BSP or its officials to verify it directly through its official channels: (+632) 8811-1277 or 8811-1BSP, or [email protected].
